EV’s To Look Out For In 2025

Following on from our previous post about combustion engine cars to look out for in 2025 we thought we’d follow it up with a look at electric vehicles that are anticipated to be released during 2025. With the combustion engine ban becoming ever closer and the ZEV Mandate forcing manufacturers to sell more and more EV’s year on year until that date, there is more choice than ever when it comes to purchasing an electric vehicle.

With many brands easing their way in to a fully electric line up, others are surging ahead with their all-electric plans, and some are even on their second generation of an electric model. So what are the most anticipated electric cars likely to be announced over the next 12 months, read on to find out.

Range Rover Electric

The Range Rover Electric has been anticipated for some time now yet even Land Rover have started to release teaser photographs of what is likely to be the most capable EV for any conditions. Whilst it may offer exactly the same appearance, technology and luxuriousness as the current line-up that isn’t exactly a bad thing. Details on possible range and performance have been limited thus far, however Land Rover bosses have said that they wanted it to match the V8 versions as much as possible.

What we can be sure of is that Land Rover have been more than thorough with the testing of its capabilities and performance in all conditions. The brand themselves released teaser images of extreme weather testing in the coldest harshest environments in the Arctic Circle as well as in the hot unforgiving deserts of the Middle East. After all it wouldn’t be a Range Rover if it wasn’t capable of venturing off road and then some, and with the instant power of an EV it is said to be even better than its combustion engine equivalents.

One thing that has not been mentioned is price. But with the current range starting at just over £100,000 for the least expensive trim level, expect the electric version to cost quite a bit more than that. Though just like Rolls Royce found with an electric powertrain, the quietness and effortless power delivery simply adds to the luxuriousness and refinement. Something that the latest Range Rover already offers in abundance.

Tesla Model Y

Tesla have been in the electric car game for such a long time that they are one of the few manufacturers who are already having to replace their existing line up to keep ahead of their competitors. Their recent refreshment of the Model 3 kept the model looking sharp and improved all areas of an already impressive vehicle. Next in line is the Model Y.

The Model Y has been such a sale success for the company that it regularly features near or at the very top of sales charts across all powertrains, not just for EV’s. It also has become the yardstick to which most manufacturers are aiming their latest models at and that mid-sized SUV’s are compared to when they are tested.

Expect more of an evolution than a revolution when it comes to styling and capability but when the current model is already a more than impressive prospect, a refresh is all that is needed to ensure the Model Y remains one if the best EV vehicles on sale. Once a considerable leader in range, something that has become one of the most important factors for EV’s, others are beginning to catch up so expect range and performance to be one of the biggest improvements. An overhaul of the interior, improvements to the styling and aero efficiency, as well as technology updates will ensure the Model Y continues to be a big seller.

Jaguar Type 00

No brand has been involved in more controversy and debate than Jaguar recently. From the decision to halt production entirely for the whole of 2025 to the response to their rebrand and the teaser images of their likely first vehicle, it hasn’t been an easy time for the proud British company. But if you’re going to launch a new era for a brand, why not make it completely different and start all over again.

And start all over again is exactly what they are doing. The unveiling of the Type 00 concept was described by Jaguar as ‘Bold’ and ‘Unexpected’ and they weren’t kidding. Whereas Jaguars of old have been curvaceous and beautiful to look at, the Type 00 is much more angular and menacing in appearance, despite the Miami Pink and London Blue colouring. They are certainly a statement, but then again why follow the crowd. What other current EV’s actually stand out amongst the sea of generic SUV’s and saloons? There aren’t many.

Jaguar have been brave and certainly bold with their new direction and branding, but what better time to reinvent the brand and come up with something different. They seemingly have moved away from their appeal to the middle aged and retired and are seeking a younger demographic. With no new cars being made in 2025 the company will need their new range to hit the ground running, hopefully the more details released throughout 2025, the more their new direction will gather momentum.

Ferrari EV

Much like the talk of a Ferrari SUV that we were told would never happen, a Ferrari EV would have been even less likely until their hand was forced by the combustion engine ban. A Ferrari is supposed to be a symphony of a V8 or V12 (or lately perhaps less so as a V6) offering as much an audible excitement as a visual one. Something an EV sadly cannot offer.

But just like brands such as Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren have embraced hybrid technology to enhance the performance of their supercars, surely an electric powertrain will certainly ensure that the performance remains the crucial part of the package. Maserati showed with their latest GranTurismo that you can still have stunning looks and combustion engine pedigree yet offer a desirable fully electric sports car, no doubt Ferrari will do the EV thing the way only Ferrari can.

Though it hasn’t actually been confirmed, surely a fully electric Ferrari product is in the pipeline, but up till now there has been no indication as to whether it would be a supercar, grand tourer or a derivative of the emphatically non-SUV SUV, the Purosangue. With nearly every other brand sharing details of how they plan to embrace the electric car future, hopefully 2025 will be the year that Ferrari show what they have up their very fashionable sleeves.

Porsche Boxster / Cayman

One brand that have not been shy about surprising everyone with a fully electric model when it is time to be replaced is Porsche. From that time the Mission E concept quickly became the Taycan to the latest Macan snubbing hybrid and going straight to all electric, there has been no secret that the forthcoming Boxster and Cayman sports cars are also planned to follow suit. They have also stated last year that 2025 will be the year they are to be announced.

With a penchant for often making concept cars a reality, the GT4 e-Performance and Mission R concepts of a few years ago showed how serious Porsche were already taking the EV direction of their entry level sports cars. Whereas they were equipped with 1,000bhp powertrains and featured extra lightweight bodywork and full racing roll cages, the road going Cayman and Boxster are unlikely to be that extreme. Though you probably shouldn’t rule out a GT4 RS again that may offer some of that potential.

Just as the Taycan changed little externally from the Mission E concept car, what the concepts do give us is a strong idea of what the styling of the new cars may look like. With slimmer headlights, more pronounced wheel arches and curvaceous bodywork, the early signs are very positive. With the current Porsche electric powertrain being some of the very best on the market it is sure to offer all the thrills and driving appeal of the current cars, if not more. All of this means that the all-electric Cayman and Boxster variants may very well be the EV’s to tempt reluctant people to make the switch.

Audi A6 E-Tron

Speaking of those strong Porsche EV powertrains, sister company Audi have taken full advantage of the group’s latest shared Premium Platform Electric (PPE) base to create the stylish and well received A6 E-Tron. Sharing much of the technology and underpinnings with the latest Macan, the range, performance and variations in drive and power outputs are not only plentiful but some of the best around.

Where the Audi has also received a lot of its praise has been its latest svelte and aerodynamic bodywork, looking more stylish and coupe-like than ever before. Inside the usual refined and luxurious Audi interior has been enhanced even further and is now awash with larger screens, even more abundant features and driver aids and more eco-conscious materials.

Whilst orders are being taken for the A6 and S6 in Sportback and Avant body styles we are yet to see them on the road. Motoring press reviews have however been very positive, and Audi seem to have a potential class leader on their hands. With a likely RS version also apparently to be announced at some point this year it will surely only be a matter of time before performance Audi fans are considering an EV as their future executive powerhouse.

BMW Neue Klasse

Though BMW has one of the strongest EV line ups of all the established prestige manufacturers, their styling of recent years has had its critics. A BMW has always been a conservative and stylish executive range of cars, yet recently many have described the brand as slightly losing its way and appearing overly fussy. BMW themselves seem to have also had a rethink and have released their vison of the future of the brand in their ‘Neue Klasse’ concept cars.

By taking inspiration from their historic models and creating angular and modern variations of the exterior styling, the concepts look futuristic yet instantly recognisable as a BMW product. Inside they previewed minimalist interiors with a single screen for controls yet with 3D Head Up Display and a full width ‘Panoramic Vision’ projecting information across the full width of the windscreen. Something that could very easily be part of the next generation of their line-up.

So what does this mean for 2025? Well with the constant updating of the range to incorporate their latest design language, it won’t be long before the first Neue Klasse styled cars are released this year or previewed for next year. Already the concept car series have shown the likely appearance of the next iX3 with the ‘Neue Klasse X’, as well as the potential all-electric replacement for the 3-series. The future certainly looks very stylish for the legendary German brand.

Polestar 5

Polestar may have had a difficult 2024 with changes of management and uncertain direction being a constant distraction for the brand. But one place they have gone from strength to strength has been the products they are building. With the brand already considered one of the coolest EV companies around, their focus on driver enjoyment, real-world performance and the upmost in safety has meant they have received plenty of plaudits for their efforts.

The Polestar 2 has long been considered one of the only cars to be a genuine rival to the Tesla Model 3, yet in an even more stylish and higher quality product. The Polestar 3 has continued this in a mid-size SUV format that offers driver enjoyment and practicality for the whole family. Whilst the Polestar 4 crosses the boundaries between SUV and Coupe in an equally stylish package.

For 2025 they have the Polestar 5, an all-electric super saloon ready to take on the Taycan, Model S and Lotus Emeya in a more sustainable and technologically sympathetic way. Polestar say that their ‘Precept’ that will become the ‘5’ has been created with sustainability at the forefront of its development and that the advanced technology will be ‘what you need to know, when you need to know it’. A welcome focus on reducing distraction whilst driving as well as knowing that the car has been created as environmentally conscious as possible. What most people will want to know however is that it is set to have 874hp, 900Nm of torque and four-wheel drive.

Alpine A290

One of the most appealing recent EV unveilings especially amongst small hatchbacks has been the much-anticipated Renault 5. A retro influenced modern take on one of the brand’s most popular models of all time and a welcome stylish addition to the electric car market. Whilst it may be right up to date, it evoke memories of many people’s childhoods or first cars, the 5 is certainly a welcome reincarnation to the EV market.

What most people want, however, is a hot hatch. Something that the electric car market has up to now struggled to produce. Renault, or rather performance sister company, Alpine, are set to change all that. The Alpine A290 takes the standard Renault 5 and adds more power, more aggressive styling and a more driver focused prospect. An even more nostalgic modern variation of one of the most iconic hot hatchbacks of them all, the Renault 5 Turbo.

Taking the powertrain from the larger Renault Megane, the A290 offers 215bhp with the addition of an overboost function for even more limited time power bursts. It also features torque vectoring, enhanced suspension and bigger brakes to handle the increase in power. With wider bodywork, deeper bumpers, a rear spoiler and bigger wheels it also more than looks the part to complete the hot hatch appeal.

Hyundai Ioniq 9

If someone had told you 10 years ago that Hyundai would be selling a car that started at £65,000, with the top of the range version more like £85,000, they’d think you’d gone crazy. But the Hyundai Motor Group, who also own a large part of Kia, produce some of the most popular and well regarded EV’s on the market. They even produce one of the very best performance EV’s money can buy in the IONIQ 5 N. Who saw that coming.

Now Hyundai are taking a leaf out of their sister company’s book by aiming for the luxury SUV EV market with their new Ioniq 9. Using the excellent Kia EV9 as a base, the Ioniq 9 will be the biggest car they’ve ever made crammed with the latest technology and more than enough room for all the family, and more. The Ioniq 9 will also feature a huge 110kWh battery for a range just under 400 miles, Six and Seven seat layout options, up to 2,000 litres of luggage space and features such as dual large touch screen displays, an AI assistant and even active road noise cancellation.

If you can get past the badge snobbery fact, the Ioniq 9 gives you everything you need and so much more in a smart and stylish package. Owning a South Korean car used to be a cheap and spartan way to get from A to B, but not anymore. The Ioniq 9 proves that times are changing and that we should embrace the fact that your perfect luxury EV could quite easily come from a brand you had previously not even considered. There’s a reason why the group is selling more cars then ever before year after year.
